Avatar the Last Airbender Toph Funny
Brash, abrasive, and rightfully confident, Toph is one of the most beloved characters from theAvatar: The Last Airbender. She's an earthbending master with a legacy that extends all the way into Avatar: The Legend Of Korra.
Her role on Team Avatar is irreplaceable, and it's obvious that the show wouldn't be the same without her. Aside from her legendary earthbending skills, Toph is loved for her wit and her clever lines, so fans new and old will definitely recognize these iconic Toph quotes fromAvatar: The Last Airbender.
10 "Sounds To Me Like You're Scared, Boulder!"
She's young, she's blind, and she's not afraid to trash-talk. This is Toph's iconic first line when she's introduced in Book 2's episode, "The Blind Bandit." It's a memorable one, too, considering she throws it at the guy that just flawlessly climbed through the ranks of the tournament to challenge her.
Fans of the series will probably know that the Boulder is heavily inspired by The Rock, which makes this line even more noteworthy. No one in their right mind would try and throw this kind of line at The Rock, and to do so at the Rock of theAvatar universe is either a testament to their ability or the calling card of someone with a death wish. Guess which one it is for Toph?
9 "I'm Beginning To Wonder Who's Really The Blind One Around Here."
Avatar fans know that clever quips about Toph's blindness are plentiful in this series, which is why this quote stands out. It's not intended to be funny; instead, it's a pretty insightful critique on the behavior of the rest of the team.
In Book 3's episode "The Western Air Temple," Zuko approaches Team Avatar trying to apologize for his past mistakes. He's quickly rejected by Sokka, Katara, and Aang, but Toph later criticizes the group, reminding them that Aang still needs a firebending teacher and noting that they won't even consider it. Funny how the Blind Bandit is the only one seeing the bigger picture.
8 "You've Seen Nothing Once, You've Seen It A Thousand Times."
Toph isn't down on her luck about being blind. Instead, she's embraced it, knowing that her blindness is one of those things that gives her strength. She's also very comfortable with using her own blindless as the punchline to a joke or funny remark. This line is one that she offers during Book 3's episode "Sokka's Master." The episode opens with the group enjoying a spectacular meteor shower.
Never one to miss a beat, Toph drops this line to let the crew know how unimpressed she is, considering the very obvious fact that, well, she can't see. It's a clever joke, but also sets up Sokka's response when a stray meteor gets closer than they expect; "You've never not seen anything like this!"
7 "Yeah! Let's Break Some Rules!"
Toph's rebellious nature is well established when we first meet her. She has no interest in living the lavish life of the rich and famous that her parents want for her. Instead, she craves adrenaline, action, and adventure, and this Toph quote cements that fact.
It's also the source of a good laugh due to how she punctuates the statement. In Book 2's Episode "Lake Laogai," Joo Dee stops by the house in Ba Sing Se to tell the group that they are forbidden from putting up missing Appa posters. Aang loses his temper and Toph hops on that energy with her proclamation. She then immediately earthbends down the side of the house. Way to get a jump start on it, Toph.
6 "Oh, Sokka! You Saved Me!"
Fans ofAvatar will recognize this as one of Toph's most out of character lines - and one of her most iconic ones as a result. Never one to play the damsel in distress, when the ice bridge breaks and Toph falls into the water during Book 2's episode "The Secret of the Fire Nation" was certainly a tense moment.
Maybe she was caught in the moment, but being unable to "see" and unable to swim might have frazzled her that expressing her relief was just a knee jerk reaction. The kicker? It was Suki that saved her. Realizing that makes her follow up reaction even more priceless: "Oh. Well. You can go ahead and let me drown now."
5 "There's No Different Angle, No Clever Solution, No Trickity-Trick That's Gonna Move That Rock."
The main reason Toph joined Team Avatar is to fill the role of Aang's earthbending teacher, and this quote from the Blind Bandit sums up the art in an eye-opening way. Aang's familiarity with airbending coupled with his personality makes learning earthbending incredibly challenging.
Toph's explanation in Book 2's episode "Bitter Work" calls for Aang to change his way of thinking. Versatility is important for any Avatar, and Aang is no exception. Reminding him that the bending isn't going to change to fit him is an important lesson to learn, and this Toph quote communicates that perfectly.
4 "It's Upside Down, Isn't It?"
Another joke about being blind? Definitely. This is another quote from Book 2's episode "Lake Laogai," after everyone has taken to the streets to post their missing Appa fliers. Sokka makes a comment about splitting up and covering more ground and suggests Toph stick with him.
Toph takes a bit of offense to this and tries to prove that she's perfectly capable of taking on the task on her own. Defiantly, she slaps a poster onto the wall...but it's facedown. This makes her comment that much funnier.
3 "I Am The Greatest Earthbender In The World; Don't You Two Dunderheads Ever Forget It!"
Bold statements like this usually get checked, but Toph can say it and everyone would agree - especially considering the circumstances that led her to say it.
When Toph is kidnapped by Master Yu and Xin Fu in Book 2's episode "The Earth King," she ends up in a metal trap, something that earthbenders can't bend their way out of. Not one to be discouraged, Toph invents metal bending in order to escape in the following episode. After seeing that happen, she definitely deserves the title of greatest earthbender in the world.
2 "It Looks Just Like Him To Me!"
Another quote showcasing Toph's wit, this takes place at the beginning of Book 2's "Lake Laogai" episode. It's in response to Sokka's drawings of Appa, trying to offer a word of encouragement after Aang and Katara question Sokka's work.
It really doesn't need much explanation - it's just a funny scene to watch, even if it is at Sokka's expense. It speaks to Toph's ability to read the room, and her comedic timing. Her support has to count for something!
1 "I Am Not Toph, I Am Melon Lord!"
Easily Toph's most iconic quote, Melon Lord is a character that no fan could ever forget. In Book 3's "Sozin's Comet Part 1: The Phoenix King," Melon Lord is a dummy, manned by Toph, against which Aang can practice for his upcoming battle with Fire Lord Ozai.
During the fight, Toph reminds her friends that she takes her role very seriously with this declaration. When it comes to practicing for the biggest fight of their lives, she can't afford to hold back. With Toph in charge, Melon Lord is easily one of the most dangerous characters in the series.
